Rayon vs Viscose? What’s the Difference, and Why Does It Matter in Bedding?
If you’ve ever shopped for bedsheets or bedding accessories, you’ve probably come across terms like “Rayon”, “Viscose”, “Modal”, “Tencel”, “Ecosilk” or even “Bamboo Rayon” etc.
And if you’ve wondered what they mean or if they’re just fancy names for the same thing, you’re not alone. Many customers ask us about this, and it’s a great question.
Our brands, including Jean Perry, Louis Casa, and Ann Taylor, offer products crafted from rayon and its various forms. Let’s break it down.
……………………………………………………
What is Rayon?
Rayon is a semi-synthetic fiber made from regenerated cellulose, usually derived from natural sources like wood pulp. It was originally created as an alternative to silk, and it still carries that soft, smooth, luxurious feel that makes it a favorite in bedding and fashion alike.
Though it comes from natural materials, rayon is processed in a way that gives it the softness of silk, the breathability of cotton, and the elegance of high-end fabrics, all at a more affordable price. It’s often promoted as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fabrics because it starts from plant-based sources.
So, What is Viscose Then?
Here’s where it gets a little confusing but we’ll make it simple.
Viscose is actually a type of rayon. It refers to the process used to create the fibers. In the viscose method, cellulose from wood pulp is treated and turned into a viscous liquid (hence the name), which is then spun into fibers.
The terms “viscose” and “rayon” are often used interchangeably, especially depending on the country or marketing style. In the U.S., “rayon” is more commonly used, while “viscose” is more frequently heard in Europe and parts of Asia. At the end of the day, they’re both referring to the same family of fabric.

Types of Rayon You Might See in Bedding
All of these belong under the Rayon Umbrella, but here are some variations you might encounter:
Viscose Rayon
The most common and widely used form. Known for its smooth texture, great drape, and softness, perfect for bedsheets and pillowcases.
Modal
Made specifically from beech tree pulp, modal is stronger and more durable than traditional viscose. It holds up well in washing and is often used in loungewear, sleepwear, and high-quality sheets.
Ecosilk
Unique fabric made from cellulose fibers that are extracted from tree bark. These cellulose fibers are then combined with natural cotton. Durable & Eco-friendly. Prized for its softness and sheen.
Lyocell (often branded as Tencel™)
A newer generation of rayon made using a more eco-conscious process. It typically uses eucalyptus, oak, or bamboo pulp and is known for being breathable, moisture-wicking, and incredibly gentle on the skin. Great for hot sleepers.
Bamboo Rayon, Bamboo Modal, Bamboo Tencel, etc.
When you see sheets labeled as “bamboo,” they’re usually referring to rayon made from bamboo pulp. This gives you the benefit of bamboo’s sustainability with rayon’s silky smoothness.

Why Does This Matter for Bedding?
Choosing the right fabric for your bedding is all about what feels good to you, and rayon-based fabrics are incredibly popular for good reason.
· Soft & Smooth – Feels amazing against the skin
· Breathable – Keeps you cool at night
· Drapes Beautifully – Gives your bed a hotel-like finish
· Gentle on Skin – Ideal for people with sensitive skin or allergies
So whether your sheets say viscose, modal, ecosilk, lyocell, or tencel, you’re still getting a luxurious, plant-based fabric that’s designed for comfort.
Wrapping Up:
To put it simply, Rayon is the family of fabric, and Viscose is one type of it. Other types like Modal, Ecosilk and Lyocell/Tencel bring their own perks, but they all come from the same natural roots.
So next time you see “rayon” , “viscose”, or any of the mentioned terms on a label, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting.
