Tencel & Lyocell fabrics ARE THE SAME??!

Understanding the Difference Between Tencel™ and Lyocell: Spoiler – They’re Essentially the Same

When shopping for eco-friendly bedding materials, you might come across two names that sound familiar: Tencel™ and Lyocell. If you’ve ever wondered what the difference between the two is, you’re not alone. In fact, the confusion is quite common, but the truth is simpler than you think, Tencel and Lyocell are essentially the same thing!

What are Tencel™ and Lyocell Made Of?

Both Tencel™ and Lyocell are fabrics made from natural cellulose, most commonly derived from wood pulp. This wood pulp often comes from eucalyptus trees but can also include beech, bamboo, or other woods. Both fabrics share the same sustainable origins, making them a popular choice for eco-conscious consumers.

The Sustainable Advantage

The production process for both Tencel™ and Lyocell is much more sustainable than older cellulose-based fabrics like rayon and modal, which relied on heavy viscose processing that caused environmental damage. The Lyocell production process, on the other hand, involves using a closed-loop system that minimizes waste and uses fewer harmful chemicals, making it a more eco-friendly option.

Why Does Tencel™ Get All the Attention?

If they’re the same, why have you probably heard more about Tencel™? Simply put, Tencel is a brand name. Austrian textile company Lenzing AG produces Tencel™ fibers, which are essentially branded Lyocell. It’s similar to how Maggi has become synonymous with instant noodles for Malaysians. Even though there are other brands, people often use the term 'Maggi' to refer to all instant noodles. The same has happened with Tencel™ and Lyocell, with Tencel™ often being used as a catch-all term for Lyocell fabric.

High Comfort, Low Environmental Impact

TENCEL™ branded Lyocell and Modal fibers are well-known for their softness, breathability, and comfort. These fibers are made from responsibly sourced wood and are produced using resource-efficient methods, making them an excellent choice for eco-friendly bedding.

So.., when you see Tencel™ or Lyocell listed as a fabric in your bedding products, rest assured that both are equally soft, breathable, and sustainable. Whether you prefer the name-brand Tencel™ or generic Lyocell, you’re still making a great choice for comfort and the environment.

At Jean Perry, we are proud to offer bedding made from these high-quality, eco-friendly materials to enhance your sleep experience while caring for the planet.
